Guru Purnima is a sacred festival of reverence, gratitude and devotion towards the Guru (spiritual teacher). It is celebrated on the full moon (Purnima) of the Ashadha month. The word "Guru" is made of two syllables — "Gu" meaning darkness and "Ru" meaning the one who removes it. Thus a Guru is one who leads the disciple out of the darkness of ignorance towards the light of knowledge.

On this day, disciples touch the feet of their Guru to seek blessings and offer flowers, garments and dakshina (offering). Special pujas, discourses and satsangs are held in ashrams, schools and monasteries, where the Guru imparts the knowledge of life and spirituality to the disciples.
Many devotees observe a fast, remember Ved Vyas and their own Guru, and recite the Gita and other scriptures. Practitioners of yoga and meditation regard this day as especially significant. It is believed that Maharishi Ved Vyas was born on this sacred day. He compiled the four Vedas and composed the Mahabharata, the eighteen Puranas and the Shrimad Bhagavata. He is regarded as the Adi Guru (the first teacher). According to another belief, on this day Lord Shiva imparted the knowledge of yoga to the Saptarishis and became the "Adi Guru." In the Buddhist tradition, Lord Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath on this very day.
Maharishi Ved Vyas was the son of sage Parashar and Satyavati. Having attained immense knowledge, he divided the Vedas into four parts — Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda — so that ordinary people could understand them. For this reason he came to be known as "Ved Vyas" (the one who split the Vedas).
Ved Vyas composed the vast epic Mahabharata, which contains the divine teaching of the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita. He also composed the eighteen Puranas and the Shrimad Bhagavata. In gratitude for this great contribution, Guru Purnima is celebrated as Vyasa Purnima. The festival symbolizes the sanctity of the Guru-disciple tradition and teaches us that the stream of knowledge must flow continuously from Guru to disciple.
